Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – a process developed to help clients process traumatic memories and events unconsciously. EMDR is primarily utilized to treat post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. Modeled on REM (rapid eye movements during sleep) which facilitates left-brain, right-brain hemisphere processing. These events can include experiences such as physical or emotional abuse. The intense feelings that result from these types of events can become ‘locked’ in the nervous system and later produce symptoms of fear, anxiety, sadness and anger. It is a profound tool for rapid change.
